Masked lady
Venice enchants. Ornate palazzos float in unreality as mist rises from the Grand Canal. My gondola meanders between crumbling walls. Water gates slide by as I wonder what lies beyond. This city, like gems, pearls and all things beautiful, fascinates and seems imbued with magic.

The ancients ascribed protection, healing and good fortune to various gems. "My Magic of Gems" section gives detailed information for those of you who wish to learn more about these wonderful stones.

Jewelry Care

Gems and precious metals are gifts of nature, which need special care. Even though gemstones may be millions of years old, once mined and worn, they are exposed to conditions and chemicals that can cause damage venezia bella jewels come in a customized velvet pouch to protect your treasure from scratches and snags during storage or travel, but take care not to crush or bend. Enjoy!

  • Put jewels on last, after cosmetics, hairspray and perfume. Pearls are especially sensitive to chemicals and abrasives, but all metals and gems will dull if coated with cosmetics or scratched.
  • After each wearing, and before storing jewelry, use a smooth, soft, cotton cloth to gently wipe each piece of jewelry clean of make-up and skin oils. Always use 100% cotton cloths for cleaning because polyester and coarse fabrics may contain wood fibers or synthetics, which impart fine scratches.
  • Periodically, clean precious gemstones and pearls by soaking in a very mild detergent and warm water. You may use a very soft old toothbrush to carefully remove dirt from backs or settings, but never scrub. Ammonia-based cleaners are too harsh for all pieces except diamonds and sapphires. Rinse and pat dry gently but thoroughly, then air dry.
  • If your piece is knotted, take care not to stretch the cord while wet.  Pearls or strung gemstone necklaces may need restringing every two years or even annually with frequent use.
  • Polish metal with a soft cloth. A soft foam makeup applicator under the cotton cloth is sometimes useful in reaching small areas.
  • To help retard tarnish on sterling silver, wrap in a soft cotton cloth or special non-tarnish tissue in a plastic zip lock bag and seal.
  • Carry or store items in soft individual pouches. Gemstones vary in their hardness, and scratching detracts from the luminosity of the stones or pearls. Treat them gently. Never toss jewelry items together. Hard stones and metal can scratch softer gems. Take care to not to crush or bend necklaces as this can break fittings, clasps and bails.
